John Darley and Bibb Latane.
Major contribution to our understanding of psychology
Both Bibb Latane and John Darley were investigating in the our emotions and the way we respond to situations in emergencies. This is part of the socio cultural perspective of psychology.
Significant research with some examples:
The bystander effect was first demonstrated by Bibb Latane and John Darley,  After the murder of  Kitty Genovese, who was murdered  in a New York suburb in March 1964 while  38 witnesses watched on, none even called the Police.  Bibb Latane and John Darley were interested in what people would do in emergency situations, they used pre planned experiments to time how long it took for people to act, or respond to the situation at all. The experiments found that when there are people are around they restrained from helping or contacting people about the problem.
